Sony Press Conference Wrap-Up | E3 2012 Coverage
As we’d hoped, the Sony press conference was tremendous with a wide range of exciting announcements including a number of great new games. The new game lineup includes some pretty exciting titles.
Playstation Plus is receiving an update. This update will give Playstation Plus users even more content for their dollars. Players will now be given free triple-A titles ranging from Saint’s Row 2 to Infamous 2. Games will also be available for download on the Vita. These games will be rotated so gamers will be able to experience all of these classic games.
Sony hopes that with Wonderbook, reading will be more of an experience for children. Using the Playstation Move and EyeToy, the Wonderbook allows plays to interact with the book and the stories inside. There are a few books announced so far. One is Moonbot’s Diggs Nightcrawler, which is a crime noir book. The other is the J.K Rowling book called the Book of Spells. This book allows players to learn about the world of Harry Potter through a fun and interactive way.
Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
This game is notorious for it’s similarity to the Super Smash Brothers franchise. While the premise and style may have similarities, the overall gameplay mechanics are quite different. Instead of knocking characters off the stage, players are tasked with building up a power gauge. Once the gauge us filled at least once, characters can unleash their special moves. If the gauge is powered up more the special attack will be more powerful and last longer.
Also, Nathan Drake from Uncharted and Big Daddy from Bioshock have joined the cast of characters. This game will also have cross-play between PS3 and Vita.
Call of Duty Black Ops 2: Declassified
Sony announced that this Call of Duty game is coming out for the Vita. It will be a separate game from Call of Duty Black Ops 2, but it will still have similar gameplay and a robust multiplayer offering that fans of the series have come to expect.
Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation
Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation is another exclusive Vita spinoff that comes from one of the most popular franchises around. This title stars a female assassin named Aveline. It takes place in New Orleans, which is a stark contrast from the forest seen in the Assassin’s Creed 3 gameplay footage. Hopefully this will be a full-fledged game on the Vita that will stand side by side to its console brethren.
Assassin’s Creed 3
Even though Ubisoft had already shown this game, the Assassin’s Creed at the Playstation Conference was a totally different beast. The preview took place on the high seas with Conner acting as captain. Players will actually be able to control the ship in the game. Also, the preview showed ship combat. The combat didn’t seem overly complicated, but it did look gorgeous as the ships tore each other apart.
Far Cry 3
The Playstation conference offered a totally different look at the Far Cry 3 experience. They showed a whole new co-op mode that allowed 4 players to play together. Ubisoft gave the impression that this was a separate gameplay experience from the single-player campaign, so it is not known what is different from the 2 modes. However, the co-op looks every bit as action packed and exciting as its single-player counterpart.
Beyond: Two Souls
The next game from David Cage and his team at Quantic Dream, Beyond: Two Souls seeks to expand upon the immersion that Heavy Rain, their first game, brought to the table. This game is told over the span of 15 years, as player progress through the life of Jodie Holmes (played by Ellen Page) and the spiritual presence named Aiden that travels with her.
Needless to say, the game looks amazing with its breathtaking visuals so hopefully Quantic Dream can achieve the goal they have set for this game.
God of War: Ascension
This is the first we have seen of God of War: Ascension since the games was announced with its multiplayer preview. Now Sony gives us a glimpse of the single-player portion of the game. If you had played this series, you will know what to expect. Over-the-top action and brutality were rampant in the preview just like the previous games. However, Kratos seems to have many more tools of violence this time around. The game looks beautiful and those who love action games will love this game.
The Last of Us
It seems that Sony ended their conference on the highest possible note. This game looks absolutely amazing. The preview showcased the action that the game possesses and the different systems that enhance it. Joel and Ellie find their way into a building, which holds a few hostiles, after expending all of his bullets, Joel tries to fire the gun and the enemy hears it click.
This prompts the enemy to come out of hiding where he is hit by a brick thrown by Ellie and then taken out by Joel. These moments makes the characters in this world feel real because they react like actual people. Another cool aspect is the crafting system. When Joel hears some enemies coming around the corner, he quickly crafts a molotov cocktail and catches them unaware. The crafting was quick and efficient and should be effective for any situation that comes up in the game.
The Last of Us is brutal, but through the characters you see the humanity in this game. This game looks to be a great addition to the Playstation 3 library.
